BEST MEMORY OF DELEHANTY HIGH
Nedicks on the corner of Sutphin and Jamaica in freshman year, the bus terminal in junior and senior year, the piano in the study hall (was it room 14??), the Rye Beach trips and graduating third in the class of 1958 because, unlike Avis, "I'm number three, I don't try at all" a take-off on an advertising motto of the day, Avis was "..number two, we try harder."

Job:
I began teaching HS math in Sept. 1961, became an Assistant Principal at Forest Hills HS in 1970, transferred to Beach Channel in 1973. Became a JHS Principal in 1982, then a HS principal in 1987. From 1989 through 1996 I taught Mathematics at John Jay College for Criminal Justice in the Evening Session. In the late 1970's helped Mr. Riccio out by being the "Supervising Principal" at Delehanty's. I had the State license, no one else did, so I signed off on all of the State paperwork. Once the school became Jamaica Prep and moved to Howard Beach I was no longer connected with it. Retired in 1996, went back to teaching math in college. In 2000 was asked to become the dean of the college and oversee all instruction. Counting the days until my wife retires and we both spend our time among the beaches in Florida, the grandson's in Mass. and our place in the Virgin Islands.

Comments:
After spending my professional career mostly in high schools, including some of the best public schools of their day, I can truly say that the quality of the teachers I had, from Mr.Hearn through Mr. Servillo, Mr.G, Mr. Dowling, Ms. Salvati, was among the highest I ever knew. Ms. Salvati and Mr. Servillo, in particular, employed teaching techniques that were "light years" ahead of their time, for the 1950's. I regret that my group from the 1950's never really pushed to make an alumni association viable back then.
